preface
This book as a site fluctuates between moment and stability, between the informal, the immediate and the on-going.
It embodies the drifting of our projects and working, engaging with functionality, site sensitivity, and in-depth reading into what establishes a 'space of experience'.
This book as a site is continuously in a state of becoming, an active dynamic construction, a support system for a way of thinking, acting, and practicing.

Since 1995, Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol work as Bik Van der Pol. They work and live in Rotterdam (NL).
Through their practice Bik Van der Pol aim to articulate and understand how art can produce a public sphere and space for speculation and imagination.
Their work is informed by ‘site-sensitive’ research, conceived as a collection objects, archives of information, or infrastructure, aiming to articulate how different areas of knowledge and experience can be harnessed to create a platform for exchange.
Through their working process, they create choreographies that set up the conditions for encounters, enabling a continuous reconfiguration of places, histories and audiences.
Their practice is collaborative, with dialogue as a mode of transfer; a “passing through”, understood in its etymological meaning of “a speech across or between two or more people, out of which may emerge new understandings”. In fact, they consider the element of “passing through” as vital. It is temporary and implies action and the development of new understandings forms of discourse.
Encompassing performance, film, installations, publications, public projects, curating and working with institutions, their work is both instigator and result of this method.
