The Museum of lnstallation (MOI) was a unique UK registered Charity, co-founded in 1990 by artist Michael Petry, with the charitable remit dedicated to the research, production and dissemination of Installation Art. MOI positioned itself as the centre of this practice and offered artists from around the world an opportunity to make work in a non commercial setting when few other institutional opportunities were available.
Michael Petry's text about re-siting installations (published in 'You Are Here', edited by the Royal College, London, 1997), has been of great influence on our practice. To understand thoroughly what it is that we are reading and thinking, the full text is copied by us, letter by letter, using stencil-plate, onto the walls of our studio.
Like monks transcribing text, we - through the slow laborious method used - aimed to get to know the text fully, by truly and deeply engaging with it, word-by-word, letter-by-letter. One page per wall, eight pages, eight walls.
For the show 'New Text Based Work' at Kaus Australis (with Kamiel Verschuren/Bo Andrea (NL) and Jason Coburn (GBr)) we re-sited the text through the use of eight slide projectors, projecting the transcribed text - including some surroundings of our studio- on the walls of the exhibition space.
A later version of the work consists of an installation featuring the printed slide-images on eight transparent curtains.
