The Shower Piece

The Shower Piece (developed with Peter Fillingham) is a functional copy of the shower of Arno van Roosmalen, at that time curator of the Rotterdam City Collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the first guest invited by REST.
REST is developed with Jeanne van Heeswijk and Hans Snoek. REST imagines a place where traditional hierarchies and relationships in and out of the field of the arts can be broken down, so that new meanings can arise and develop. The underlying idea is that REST regards no one aspect of our culture as more meaningful or important than another. It investigates different points of views, magnifies what seems to be too small, illuminates what has been in the dark.
REST invites co-operators who are given the space to share their motives, their drive.
Arno van Roosmalen decided to live in the studio of one of the initiators for three weeks, studying, experiencing and describing a selection of art works, texts and music. REST brought these works to the studio. He also asked REST to invite guests to talk about the concept of the project and his won response to REST. There was no publicity made; after this period he talked about REST and its impact during lectures at art-schools and artist-run-spaces.

The Shower Piece
The Shower Piece was constructed because this was the only place where Arno could really reflect and think. Due to practicalities the piece was built on a base.
After being in use during REST, The Shower Piece was shown as an object at Cubitt Gallery, London (1995) and at De Paviljoens, Almere (2001).
